Illegal Alien with Homicide Conviction Arrested in Massachusetts

A Colombian man, who had been released into the U.S. despite a homicide conviction in his home country, was recently detained by immigration authorities in Massachusetts.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of the 49-year-old Colombian national in Pittsfield, MA, on Monday. The man is wanted in Colombia for serious crimes including aggravated homicide, aggravated theft, and illegal possession of a weapon, crimes for which he was convicted in 2016.

Details of the Convict's Crimes and Capture

According to an ICE press release, the Colombian national was initially arrested in Bucaramanga, Colombia, on April 5, 2014. He was charged with aggravated homicide, aggravated theft, and possession of a weapon. Later, on September 29, 2016, he was convicted and sentenced to 17 years in prison by the criminal court in Bucaramanga.

However, on November 27, 2023, the same individual was apprehended after illegally entering the U.S. near San Luis, Arizona. The circumstances surrounding his release from his home country following his 2016 conviction remain unclear.

Release into the U.S. and Subsequent Arrest

After being caught in Arizona, the man was processed by Border Patrol and issued a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge at a later date. He was then released into the U.S. It wasn't until May 6 that he was arrested near his residence in Pittsfield. He is currently in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

"This Colombian national is wanted in his home country for some very serious crimes," said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons. "He attempted to hide out in Massachusetts, and now he will have to answer for his actions."

Despite efforts by authorities, dangerous foreign criminals continue to be found illegally present in the U.S.
