President Biden's Bold Move: Undocumented Immigrants with US Ties ProtectedPresident Biden Declares Deportation Protections for Certain Undocumented Immigrants President Joe Biden made a statement on Tuesday, declaring that his administration will not deport a number of undocumented immigrants who are married to US citizens or have a parent who is married to a US citizen. This decision will affect approximately 500,000 spouses of US citizens and about 50,000 children. These individuals will not face deportation and will have the opportunity to obtain legal status without having to leave the United States, according to the White House. The Department of Homeland Security will oversee this new program, which will be applicable to undocumented adult immigrants who have resided in the US for a minimum of 10 years as of June 17, and are married to a US citizen. During an event commemorating the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was initiated during President Barack Obama's tenure when Biden was Vice President, Biden is expected to deliver a speech on Tuesday afternoon. As of September 30, 2023, the program has granted protection to 544,690 migrants. Who is Biden Trying to Win Over? The White House claims that this new program "will foster family unity and bolster our economy, offering a significant advantage to the nation and assisting US citizens and their noncitizen family members to remain together." As noted by the Epoch Times, individuals who enter the country illegally are typically required to leave and secure legal status before they can re-enter the United States. Under President Biden's administration, illegal immigration has surged, with 2.4 million encounters at the US-Mexico border in 2023 alone. On June 4, Biden signed an order suspending asylum requests when the average daily encounters with undocumented immigrants at the southern border surpass 2,500. However, he hinted at further measures to aid undocumented immigrants during that announcement. “In the upcoming weeks—and I mean the upcoming weeks—I will discuss how we can make our immigration system more equitable and just,” he stated at that time. The new program's eligibility criteria imply that it will be applicable to individuals who are integral to communities across the country. On average, those eligible for the process have lived in the United States for 23 years, according to the White House. “President Biden is of the belief that securing the border is crucial. He also supports expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and believes that immigrants who have lived in the United States for decades, paid taxes, and contributed to their communities, are an integral part of our country's social fabric,” the White House statement read. The president also mentioned that his administration is facilitating the process for undocumented immigrants who received protection under DACA, earned a college degree, and received a job offer from a US business to obtain work visas. The announcement was met with praise from some quarters, who stated that the program would be beneficial to those affected. “An estimated 55,000 immigrants in the Houston area are married to U.S. citizens and many of them will now be able to live, work, and raise a family without the fear of deportation,” stated Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas). However, not everyone was pleased with the announcement. Stephen Miller, a former top adviser on immigration during the Trump administration, described the program on the social media platform X as an “unconstitutional amnesty to illegal aliens”. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) expressed that the program would encourage more illegal immigration and would likely face legal challenges. Former President Trump, on his Truth Social platform on Monday, stated that he maintained a secure border during his tenure, but that President Biden had "ruined" the situation. He promised to rectify the situation if he wins the election in November. This article presents a thought-provoking perspective on the current immigration policies in the United States.
